28 Weeks!
First the Good News: Baby is growing and doing well! I swear the little bugger gets bigger every minute and that I can now feel every finger or toe wiggle. And while it keeps me up at night, it is pretty cool and amazing and just plain awe-inspiring. What a miracle this all is.
And now the less than good news: Well, every single day I wake up thinking, "I can't possibly be bigger than I was yesterday." But then I either 1. look in the mirror or 2. step on the scale and WOW! I am bigger. How is that possible??? While Grandma Masucci helped my self-esteem by declaring that I was the "most beautiful pregnant woman ever," I am still struggling with the self image of a beluga whale.
Although, I must admit, the beluga whale is pretty cute on the scale of whale! Female belugas can weigh up to 2,998 pounds (I don't think I have approached that yet). Female belugas also have a propensity for carrying large objects around (a surrogate behavior). Maybe I can get one to carry around this baby??? Opportunistic eaters (like myself), belugas can consume 3% of their total body weight per day. Friends, that's like 60 pounds of food every day! And I thought I was hungry? Of course, lest we think the beluga has it easy, gestation is about 15 months for mamma beluga. Mommy belugas give birth to calves every couple of years and the calves generally weigh about 175 pounds! Maybe this human pregnancy thing is not so bad after all?
In case you doubt me - or think I am exaggerating about my beluga-ness, here are some recent photos:
